Sign in with ChatGPT, turn off conversations, and a separate login for outgoing mail

  • New
Use your ChatGPT plan instead of an API key AI

Settings › AI › AI model › ChatGPT › Continue with ChatGPT signs in with your ChatGPT Plus or Pro account. Summaries, suggested replies, Rewrite and the AI assistant then count toward your plan's usage, up to the limit you set for bytemail in ChatGPT settings. Your sign-in stays in this Mac's Keychain, and mail goes straight to OpenAI.

  • New
    Turn off conversations Reading

Settings › Reading › Group emails into conversations is on by default. Turn it off and every email gets its own row, even replies and mail with the same subject. The choice syncs to your iPhone.

  • New
Separate login for outgoing mail Accounts

If your mail server uses a different username or password for SMTP than for IMAP, enter them under Settings › Accounts › Server Settings, or under Advanced settings when adding an account. Leave them empty to use the same login for both.

  • New
Formatted drafts from AI apps AI

Drafts that Claude and other connected AI apps write keep their bold, lists and links, whether they write Markdown or HTML, and use the same font as the drafts you write.

  • New
    Gemini CLI AI

Settings › AI › Connect your AI app now has a command to copy for Gemini CLI.

  • Improved
A nudge on Apple Intelligence AI

When Apple's on-device model is picked, the greeting suggests connecting a stronger model for better answers.

  • Improved
Quick with hundreds of folders Speed

Accounts with many folders no longer hold up opening, moving and new mail while bytemail checks every folder, and the sidebar draws faster.

  • Improved
One font with a designed signature Writing

A plain message sent with a formatted signature now arrives in bytemail's font instead of the reader's default.

  • Fixed
    Sent replies stay sent Writing

A reply could come back as a draft right after it went: left in Drafts, back in the composer, and easy to send a second time. Sending now settles it for good. A draft sent from a different account than it was written in also leaves the first account's Drafts.

  • Fixed
The assistant works with OpenAI and after switching models AI

Asking about your mail with an OpenAI key no longer fails with a 400 error, and after you pick a different model in Settings › AI, the assistant uses it right away.

The AI assistant: ask about your mail, and connect your other apps

  • New
    Ask about your mail AI

The box on the empty reading pane answers questions and does things: try "show me my unread emails" or "archive this week's newsletters". You see each step as it happens, then the answer with the conversations under it. Anything it changes can be undone in Settings › AI › Activity.

  • New
    Connectors AI

Connect Linear, Notion or any app with an MCP server in Settings › AI › Connectors, and the assistant can use them too, with any model: "file Elin's proofs email as a Linear issue". Anything that would change something in another app asks you first.

  • Improved
Suggestions from your own mail AI

The box is bigger, and under it are a few things to ask, taken from your mail, like "Show my 7 unread" or "What does Elin need?". Write to now lists the people you've written to lately, not senders of notifications.

  • Improved
Choose who's suggested under Write to AI

Point at a person under the box and click × to stop suggesting them. Right-click any of them to bring hidden people back.

  • New
    Preview attachments while writing Writing

Click a file attached to the message you're writing, or press Space on it, to check it in Quick Look before you send. Double-click opens it in its app, and pictures show a small thumbnail.

  • Improved
    Shorter answers AI

Answers are shorter, in regular text, with only names in bold.

  • Fixed
"Archive them all" works in one step AI

Archiving many conversations no longer shows a row of failed "Archiving 0 conversations" steps first, and "them" in a follow-up means the conversations it just showed you.

  • Fixed
    Compact works again Storage

Compact in Settings › Storage always stopped with "mail store is busy". It now gives the free space back to your Mac.

  • Fixed
    Fewer false verification codes Reading

ISO numbers and company registry numbers are no longer mistaken for one-time codes.

Write an email from one line, and reply from the notch

  • New
Write an email from one line Writing

With nothing open, the reading pane lists the conversations waiting on your reply and the people you write to most, and asks what you'd like to write. Say it in a few words, like "ask Hiro to bring the font licences on Thursday", and the email builds in front of you: who it's for, a subject and the text in your voice. Change any part, then open it in the composer to send. Turn it off in Settings › AI › Write from the greeting.

  • New
Reply, open links and mark as read from the notch Notch

Point at new mail in the notch and three buttons appear. Reply opens a line right in the notch: type, press Return and it goes, with Undo Send. Links lists the message's own links and opens the one you click. Mark as Read folds the notch away.

  • New
    Close the open message Reading

Press Esc, or click × at the end of the message's header, to get back to the empty reading pane.

  • Improved
Classic view shows the email itself Reading

In the classic layout, designed emails no longer sit in a rounded, outlined card. In dark mode they keep a white page, without the outline.

  • Fixed
No more false "read" notices Privacy

Opening someone's reply to a message you sent with read receipts no longer tells you they read it. The reply quotes your message, and bytemail now recognises your own receipt in it.

  • Fixed
Every picture in a long email shows Reading

In emails over 4 MB, such as a reply with several pasted photos, a picture could fail to appear. It now loads, also in emails where it was already missing.

  • Fixed
Drafts from other apps are left as written Drafts

A Gmail draft made by another app, such as an AI app, stays exactly as it was until you change something in it, and Gmail's google.com redirects come off its links when you do.

Read receipts, and bytemail in six more languages

  • New
    bytemail speaks your language App

Armenian, Dutch, French, German, Russian and Spanish join English. It follows your Mac's language, or pick one in Settings › General › Language. Your mail stays in the language it was written in.

  • New
Know when your message was read Privacy

Turn on read receipts in Settings › Privacy, or for one message with the tick button in the composer. Grey ticks turn your accent colour when it's read, in the conversation and the message list. Hover the ticks to see when.

  • New
A ping when it's read Notifications

One notification within seconds the first time one of your messages is read, and clicking it opens the message. Turn it off in Settings › Privacy.

  • New
Works with other mail apps too Privacy

Always works between bytemail users, even when they keep remote images off. Messages also ask for a standard read receipt, so Outlook and Thunderbird users can tell you they read it.

  • Improved
Your own copy doesn't count Privacy

The copy in your Sent folder never carries the read-receipt image, so looking at it in Gmail or on your phone doesn't mark it read.

  • Improved
Off until you turn it on Privacy

In the EU, checking whether someone opened an email can need their consent, so bytemail explains this and asks you to accept it first. Our server keeps only a hash of a random code, the time, whether the image loaded automatically and your device's push token, all deleted after 60 days.

  • Fixed
    Clearer switches App
